How to choose a LoRaWAN gateway for a ranch
A LoRaWAN gateway connects livestock collars in the pasture to the internet or a private network server. The right gateway depends on frequency plan, terrain, antenna position, power availability, backhaul and the number of devices expected to report at the same time. A high advertised range alone does not guarantee reliable pasture coverage.
Start with the regional frequency plan. EU868, US915 and AU915 use different channels and regulations, so collars and gateways must match the country of deployment. Next, assess gateway height and line of sight. An outdoor gateway installed above nearby trees and buildings usually covers more useful land than a higher-power device installed low inside an office.
Frequency plan
Match gateway and collar hardware to EU868, US915, AU915 or the local regional plan.
Antenna and placement
Evaluate antenna gain, cable loss, mounting height, terrain and lightning protection together.
Internet connection
Choose Ethernet, Wi-Fi, 4G or satellite backhaul according to the gateway site.
Power and enclosure
Plan AC, PoE or solar power and select an outdoor enclosure for the installation conditions.
Gateway selection checklist
- 01Confirm the legal LoRaWAN frequency plan and supported channel configuration.
- 02Estimate coverage from elevation, terrain and vegetation rather than distance alone.
- 03Select outdoor rating, operating temperature and surge protection for the gateway site.
- 04Verify backhaul availability and whether the installation needs automatic failover.
- 05Run a field survey with real collars before deciding the final number and position of gateways.
LoRaWAN gateway products and components
Select the gateway, antenna, power and backhaul as one ranch network rather than separate purchases.

Ranch network solutions
Single-gateway pilot
Validate frequency, antenna height, terrain coverage and collar performance before construction.
Multi-gateway ranch network
Use overlapping gateway coverage for large, wooded or irregular properties.
Remote backhaul deployment
Combine solar power with 4G or satellite backhaul where fixed internet is unavailable.
