Confirm the regional frequency plan
LoRaWAN operates in regional unlicensed bands. EU868, US915 and AU915 use different frequencies, channel plans and regulatory limits. The gateway, antenna and livestock collars must support the same regional plan. Confirm the deployment country before ordering hardware.
Outdoor or indoor gateway?
An indoor gateway can support a small test near buildings, but ranch coverage usually benefits from an outdoor gateway mounted above nearby obstructions. Review enclosure rating, operating temperature, surge protection and antenna connections. Outdoor hardware still needs a suitable pole, grounding, weatherproof cable entry and lightning protection.
Backhaul options
| Backhaul | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet or fiber | Buildings with reliable fixed internet | Cable route and distance |
| Wi-Fi | Short connection to an existing access point | Interference and limited reach |
| 4G | Remote gateway sites with mobile coverage | SIM, data plan and signal variation |
| Satellite | Sites without terrestrial backhaul | Cost, power and antenna visibility |
Capacity and channel support
Estimate the number of collars, reporting interval and event traffic. Livestock tracking usually sends small packets, but a large herd reporting at the same moment can create congestion. Check how many channels the gateway supports and whether the network server can manage multiple gateways and duplicate packets.
Power and installation
AC or PoE is convenient near buildings. Remote sites may need solar power, a battery, charge controller and an enclosure sized for local weather. Calculate energy use for the gateway and backhaul modem together. Design for several low-sun days rather than average daily production.
Field validation
- Mount the test gateway at the intended height.
- Use a real collar or test node at representative grazing points.
- Record signal quality and packet delivery in valleys, tree cover and distant paddocks.
- Test backhaul recovery after power or network interruption.
- Add or move gateways based on measured gaps.
Final purchasing checklist
Confirm frequency plan, channel count, enclosure rating, antenna connector, PoE or solar compatibility, backhaul, remote management, network-server compatibility, warranty and replacement availability. Treat the gateway as part of a complete ranch network rather than an isolated box.
