Hardware cost
The device price is the most visible line item but rarely the complete project. Collar hardware varies by battery size, enclosure, sensors, solar charging, radio modules and order quantity. Add spare units, replacement straps, chargers and field tools to the initial budget.
Connectivity and platform cost
4G projects may include SIM data, roaming and a platform subscription. LoRaWAN projects can reduce per-device carrier fees but require gateways, backhaul and a network server. Satellite service may price by device, message or service tier. Confirm what the quoted platform fee includes: users, history, alerts, exports, API and support.

Deployment infrastructure
For LoRaWAN, include gateway hardware, antenna, mast, cable, surge protection, enclosure, power system, installation and site access. For 4G, a coverage survey may reveal that a different carrier or external ranch connectivity is required. For remote projects, include satellite backhaul power and mounting.
Operating labor
Track the time required to install collars, manage user accounts, respond to alerts, locate missing devices and maintain gateways. A system that reduces routine searching can produce operational value, while excessive false alerts can create hidden cost.
Calculate total cost of ownership
Use a fixed comparison period such as three years and the same herd size for every option. Add initial hardware and deployment, recurring network and platform charges, estimated replacements and labor. Divide by the number of animals actively tracked and by the number of years.
Cost per tracked animal per year = total project cost ÷ active tracked animals ÷ years
Ask for a pilot quotation
A useful quotation separates hardware, recurring service, gateways, installation and customization. It should state currency, tax, shipping, warranty, minimum quantity and what changes after the first year. Pilot results can then be used to refine the full-herd budget.
Compare value as well as price
Consider the decisions the system supports: locating cattle, responding to escapes, reviewing grazing movement and reducing unnecessary field trips. Do not assign savings without ranch data. Measure outcomes during the pilot and use them in the business case.
